Personal Statement: Paul Anthony Kelly

Paul Kelly is an Executive Business Coach, primarily focusing on establishing positive team dynamics and developing effective team leadership in the workplace.

A county standard rugby player, and school 1XI rugby and hockey player in his teens, Paul studied History at University in both England (University of Warwick) and the United States (University of California, Berkeley) enjoying particular success at the latter where he was part of “Cal’s” National Championship winning rugby side (1995). Playing under Jack Clark at Berkeley. Paul was introduced to the first time to concepts around the mental attitude and approach to rugby, lessons which he valued and was able to apply to other areas of his life, most notably in the classroom, and subsequently, the office.

On graduating, Paul worked initially in the public sector, spending over a decade at the Bank of England. Starting out in the challenging world of financial markets as a foreign exchange dealer, he then continued his development by moving into policy and then operational oversight roles. He successfully delivered operational and cultural change through a range of projects, particularly in the areas of business continuity, risk management and operational oversight. As a senior analyst responsible for a team of analysts, he enjoyed the challenge of ensuring that he continued to deliver against his objectives as an individual, whilst ensuring that his team met their objectives, whilst being given the opportunities to enjoy their work and show off their talents too. His work frequently focused on successfully delivering significant operational change whilst generating positive outcomes for impacted staff, sometimes in challenging circumstances, including geographical adjustment on occasion.

Keen for a new challenge, Paul subsequently moved into the private sector as a Senior Business Analyst. Desirous of having greater autonomy, he created his own company “Neon Swan Consulting” and has undertaken work on a contractual basis. He has worked primarily on projects involving significant change for both staff and management. He has primarily worked in the banking sector for a large UK retail banks, he has used his public sector training and experience to enable effective improvement for his clients. His work has continued to focus on consolidation of operations, relocation of processes and effective transfer of knowledge between teams and geographical locations.

Paul has distilled his personal experience and insights from external training and study to develop his talents as a facilitator, with a focus on being able to aid teams and individuals bring about tangible change in their ways of working. His own experience managing teams (and importantly being managed!) have led him to develop a clear set of options for managing teams, allowing for flexibility given team size, structure, location(s) and the group dynamic.

Paul continues to play 1XI hockey at regional level and veteran’s rugby. He has chaired the Bank of England Hockey Club for 7 years and enjoys giving back to a club which has given him so much, and enjoys the slightly more relaxed public speaking opportunities the role gives him each year.
